Development Story / 開発ストーリー
■ Development Notes This tenugui (Japanese hand towel) is made from domestically produced fabric woven in Chita City, Aichi Prefecture, my hometown. This garment uses a top-quality fabric called Tokuoka, which is made with fine threads, resulting in a pleasant texture against the skin. Its thinness, excellent water absorption, and quick-drying properties make it ideal for outdoor activities and travel. Chita cotton began to be woven during the Edo period. It is primarily known for its narrow-width fabrics. It is woven using shuttle looms that weave the fabric slowly, resulting in low production volume, but because it does not put stress on the fabric, it is characterized by its smooth texture and beautiful finish. Because intricate designs cannot be achieved with traditional dyeing methods, we used digital printing with reactive dyes for this project. This method allows for detailed designs and ensures that the reverse side remains undyed.

︎About the design
I am a PCT hiker from 2022. My friend, who is a fellow mountain climber, travel buddy, and printmaker, designed the map for me. This PCT MAP was created by having the entire route of the Pacific Crest Trail, which is approximately 4200km long in the United States, drawn on a hand towel to give a rough overview of the trail. This map shows information on PCT Association trail routes and key points, with light green representing nature reserves and green representing national forests. The pink area near Tuolumne Meadows is where carrying a bear canister is mandatory. Most PCT hikers start at the Mexican border in the spring when the snow melts and aim for the Canadian border before the snow falls again. I hope you can imagine the long 4200km journey. Japanese tenugui towels are very compact, yet highly absorbent, and dry quickly because the edges are not sewn. They are also easy to reshape and can be used as a head wrap, neck gaiter, to wipe away condensation in a tent, or to take to a hot spring. The possibilities are endless. This product has a very simple design, but it has the background described above. A single piece of fabric has been dyed with skillful techniques. Please enjoy the deep colors and subtle variations. It will become softer and more comfortable against your skin with use. I used this tenugui (Japanese hand towel) on the PCT (Primary Cross Tunnel) and it turned out looking like an old map.

Caution / 注意事項
■ Notes about the product Because the edges of Japanese tenugui (hand towels) are left unfinished, they will fray when you first start using them. The fraying will stop as you wash them. Cut off any loose threads, leaving about 2-3 cm. Leaving the edges raw helps maintain quick-drying properties and prevents bacterial growth. It can also be cut open and used in emergencies such as injuries. ■ Precautions for use This product uses reactive dyes. While the dyes are less likely to transfer or fade, please hand wash before use. When washing, please wash separately from other items. Wearing it while wet may cause color transfer, so please wash it several times before wearing it around your neck. As it is a thin fabric, we recommend using a laundry net when washing in a washing machine. With the proceeds, I would like to give hand towels and whistles to people who are taking on the challenge of long-distance trails of 1000km or more. Furthermore, we will donate 1% of our sales to the PCT Association. We hikers call those who support hikers "trail angels." Even if you're not a hiker, try using this tenugui (Japanese hand towel) at hot springs or while traveling.
