■ Development notes We started by developing a classic musette-style sacoche. The classic style is simple and can swallow any kind of small load, but the very same simplicity makes it hard to stay organised and the load tends to flap around — both annoyed us in real use. On the PCT, almost every hiker was using a fanny pack or waist pack, and the feel of those bags during long days stuck in our memory. After getting back, we studied a wide range of fanny packs from different makers and worked through the design. Thinking about versatility and ease of use, we found that the standard shape was the easiest to pack and the easiest to live with. My father has used a fanny pack for years in his work at our family's sake shop, so I interviewed him about the size and how he used it, and I designed a fanny pack that works both for the sake shop and for hiking. From there we ran field tests in outdoor conditions over and over, chasing the most usable, most functional take on a classic fanny pack. • Not too big, not too small • Folds away when not in use • Holds more than it looks like it can • A map fits in horizontally • A compact camera or extra lens fits • The zipper opens wide • Bills and beer vouchers fit unfolded (so it's usable at the sake shop) ■ Size We locked in the contents and the spec first, then designed for them. Target contents: Yama-to-Kogen map / wallet / snacks / keys / regular medication / compact camera / headlamp / power bank / iPhone 15 Pro

Design Concept

Just like with the backpack's concept and design methods, we made extensive use of 3D CAD to create three-dimensional patterns. The balance of the center of gravity and ease of packing were also made possible thanks to 3D CAD.

We use a combination of three or more types of fabric, differentiating between areas where lightness is required and areas where durability is needed.

The front is made of tear-resistant Dyneema ripstop nylon, the sides use X-Pac which acts as a stiff frame, the interior uses supple and brightly colored Robic nylon, and the body-facing side uses double Russell nylon which has good breathability and cushioning.

All of these fabrics have passed field tests and tests at research institutions. They are treated with Jungle PU, which is resistant to hydrolysis, making them fabrics that can be used for a long time even in Japan's hot and humid environment.

Main body

We started with the angle at which the zipper opens.

With the pouch wrapped around your stomach, the zipper sits vertical from the wearer's view, and that angle is also where the slider runs the smoothest. The zipper extends all the way to both ends, so the opening is wide.

Each zipper pull is 3D-printed one at a time.

Inside, on the body side, there is a divider sized for a map. When you're not carrying a map, you can use a tenugui or similar cloth to add cushioning.

The main body is sized to also hold compact cameras like the RICOH GR3 or a small interchangeable lens.

The inner fabric is 100D yellow ROBIC nylon, which lights up the inside of the bag in yellow and makes it easy to see what's in it.

Front pocket

Designed as a pocket for small items and keys. The front pocket has a tall gusset, so even when the main body is full, the front pocket doesn't collapse.

Inside there is a key strap to keep your keys in place.

The pocket is sized to hold keys, a bifold wallet, earphones, and the like.

Back

Like the back of a backpack, we use a breathable, cushioned double-russell mesh. There is a pocket along the top edge for a smartphone.

On each side there are belt slots, so you can thread the strap or belt of a backpack of your choice through them.

Hooks and belt

On each side there are wire-gate buckles you can take on and off. With these buckles the belt comes off and goes back on quickly. The wire-gate buckles also let you mount the pouch onto a backpack or other gear.

With additional parts, you can also mount it onto the hip area of a backpack.

  両サイドのフックやベルトは全て取り外しが可能で修理やカスタムが容易。

  ワイヤーゲート式のフックを外すと、左右非対称のバックルの位置を変更可能。フックをバックパックや自転車にかけてサブポケットとしてアレンジも可能。
